Jijaqamij (jih-jah-qa-mij)

Spirit, Shadow, Reflection

Jijaqamij is a Mi’kmaw word that means spirit, shadow and reflection.

“Reflections of ancestral artistry” is expressing my mission to carry on the beautiful artistic traditions that our ancestors have worked with for hundreds-thousands of years (depending on the medium), so that these traditions will live on and be reflected in my own spirit as well as my children’s and hopefully many generations after them.

When these “reflections” are shared with others - whether it’s quilled art, beadedwork, baskets, etc - we’re sharing a piece of our spirit and culture, too.

Some of the work that I create is more old style traditional and some work leans more toward contemporary - allowing for fluidity and adaptation (a skill our people have been known for as their work has diversified through the centuries).
